Study in Canada from Nigeria in 2025: Visas, Costs in Naira & Universities

The Study Abroad Consultant·10 January 2025·8 min read

Canada remains the number one study abroad destination for Nigerian students, and for good reason. In 2025, Canada offers a unique combination of affordable tuition (relative to the US and UK), a clear pathway to permanent residency, and a welcoming multicultural environment. Over 20,000 Nigerian students are currently enrolled in Canadian institutions, making it the largest African student community in the country.

I have guided hundreds of Nigerian students through the Canadian admission and visa process. This guide covers everything you need to know to make your Canadian dream a reality in 2025.

Quick Summary: Studying in Canada from Nigeria

| Detail | Information | |--------|------------| | Average tuition (Undergraduate) | CAD 7,000 - 30,000/year (N5.4M - N23M) | | Average tuition (Masters) | CAD 7,000 - 20,000/year (N5.4M - N15.4M) | | Living costs | CAD 10,000 - 15,000/year (N7.7M - N11.5M) | | Study permit fee | CAD 150 (N115,000) | | Biometrics fee | CAD 85 (N65,000) | | IELTS requirement | 6.0 - 6.5 overall (no band below 5.5) | | Processing time | 8-16 weeks | | Post-study work permit | Up to 3 years | | Intakes | September (main), January, May |

Why Do Nigerian Students Choose Canada Over Other Countries?

Three factors make Canada stand out:

1. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): After completing a programme of 2 years or more, you receive an open work permit for up to 3 years. This is the most generous post-study work policy among English-speaking countries.

2. Pathway to Permanent Residency: Canadian work experience earned on a PGWP earns you significant points under the Express Entry system. Many Nigerian graduates receive PR invitations within 1-2 years of finishing their studies.

3. Affordability: Community colleges charge as little as CAD 7,000 per year (about N5.4 million), which is considerably lower than comparable institutions in the US, UK, or Australia.

Additionally, Canada allows international students to work up to 20 hours per week during term and full-time during breaks. At CAD 15-17 per hour minimum wage, that translates to N600,000-N700,000 per month -- enough to cover a significant portion of your living costs.

What Are the Best Canadian Universities and Colleges for Nigerian Students?

Your choice between a university and a college depends on your goals. Universities offer research-focused degrees, while colleges (called polytechnics or community colleges) offer career-focused diplomas and applied degrees.

Top Universities:

  • University of Toronto -- Ranked #1 in Canada. Strong in engineering, business, and sciences. Tuition: CAD 45,000-60,000/year (N34M-N46M).
  • University of British Columbia (UBC) -- Excellent for STEM and business. Tuition: CAD 40,000-55,000/year.
  • McGill University -- Montreal-based, lower tuition than Toronto/UBC. Tuition: CAD 20,000-45,000/year.
  • University of Alberta -- Affordable with strong engineering programmes. Tuition: CAD 20,000-30,000/year (N15.4M-N23M).
  • Dalhousie University -- Atlantic Canada, lower costs, immigration advantages through the Atlantic Immigration Pilot.

Top Colleges (More Affordable):

  • Conestoga College -- Waterloo region. Diploma tuition: CAD 7,000-15,000/year (N5.4M-N11.5M).
  • Centennial College -- Toronto. Popular with Nigerian students.
  • Seneca College -- Toronto. Strong business and IT programmes.
  • Niagara College -- Welland/Niagara. Lower living costs than Toronto.
  • Bow Valley College -- Calgary. Growing Nigerian community.

If your budget is tight, consider colleges in smaller Canadian cities like Welland, Sarnia, or Moncton. Living costs can be 30-40% lower than in Toronto or Vancouver, and these areas often have better immigration prospects because provincial nominee programmes favour candidates in smaller communities.

How Much Does It Really Cost to Study in Canada from Nigeria?

Let me give you an honest, all-inclusive first-year budget. I am using an exchange rate of approximately N770 per CAD (January 2025).

| Expense | Amount (CAD) | Amount (Naira) | |---------|-------------|----------------| | College tuition (1 year) | 7,000 - 15,000 | N5.4M - N11.5M | | University tuition (1 year) | 15,000 - 45,000 | N11.5M - N34.6M | | GIC (mandatory proof of funds) | 20,635 | N15.9M | | First year tuition deposit | 5,000 - 15,000 | N3.8M - N11.5M | | Rent (shared, per year) | 6,000 - 12,000 | N4.6M - N9.2M | | Food and groceries (per year) | 3,000 - 5,000 | N2.3M - N3.8M | | Health insurance (UHIP) | 600 - 900 | N460K - N690K | | Study permit + biometrics | 235 | N180K | | Flight (Lagos to Toronto) | 1,200 - 2,000 | N920K - N1.5M | | IELTS registration | -- | N130K |

Realistic total first-year budget for a college student: N28M - N40M (CAD 36,000 - 52,000).

This includes the GIC, which is a one-time refundable deposit. After your first year, ongoing annual costs drop to about N12M-N20M if you combine part-time work earnings with careful budgeting.

How Do I Apply for a Canadian Study Permit from Nigeria?

The Canadian study permit process involves these steps:

Step 1: Get your admission letter. Apply directly through the university/college portal or through the Ontario College Application Service (OCAS) for Ontario colleges. Pay the application fee (CAD 75-150 per school).

Step 2: Pay your tuition deposit. Once you receive your Letter of Acceptance (LOA), pay the required deposit. The school will then issue a letter confirming your enrolment.

Step 3: Open a GIC account. The Guaranteed Investment Certificate is a mandatory deposit of CAD 20,635 (about N15.9 million) in a Canadian bank. You can open this with banks like Scotiabank, CIBC, or BMO from Nigeria. The money is returned to you in monthly instalments once you arrive in Canada.

Step 4: Complete the online study permit application. Create an account on the IRCC portal, fill in the forms, upload all documents, and pay the CAD 150 permit fee plus CAD 85 biometrics fee.

Step 5: Provide biometrics. Visit the VFS Global centre in Lagos or Abuja to submit your fingerprints and photo.

Step 6: Wait for processing. Current processing times from Nigeria are 8-16 weeks. Apply as early as possible.

What Are the Common Reasons for Canada Study Permit Refusal?

Understanding refusal reasons helps you avoid them. The top reasons Nigerian students get refused include:

  • Insufficient proof of funds -- Your bank statements must show genuine, consistent savings. A sudden deposit of N20 million the week before you apply will raise suspicion. Build your account balance over 6-12 months.
  • Weak study plan -- The visa officer must believe you genuinely intend to study. Your SOP should clearly explain why this programme, why Canada, and why now.
  • Lack of ties to Nigeria -- You need to demonstrate reasons to return home: family, property, a business, or career prospects. Single applicants with no employment history face higher scrutiny.
  • Programme mismatch -- If you hold a Masters degree but are applying for a college diploma in an unrelated field, you need a very compelling explanation.
  • Incomplete documentation -- Missing transcripts, unsigned forms, or unclear bank statements can lead to outright refusal.

If your study permit is refused, do not panic. You can reapply with a stronger application. However, each refusal goes on your file, so it is critical to get it right the first time. Consider working with an experienced consultant who understands IRCC requirements specific to Nigerian applicants.

Can I Work While Studying in Canada?

Yes. As an international student with a valid study permit, you can:

  • Work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions (on or off campus).
  • Work full-time during scheduled breaks (summer, winter, reading week).
  • Earn CAD 15-17 per hour minimum wage depending on the province (N11,500-N13,000 per hour).

Popular student jobs include retail, food service, warehouse work, campus jobs, and tutoring. Many Nigerian students earn CAD 800-1,200 per month (N615,000-N920,000) working part-time, which covers groceries and a portion of rent.

After graduation, the PGWP allows you to work full-time for any employer. Average starting salaries for college graduates range from CAD 40,000-55,000 per year (N30M-N42M), while university graduates in STEM and business fields can earn CAD 50,000-80,000 (N38M-N61M).

What Are the Best Scholarships for Nigerian Students in Canada?

Scholarships to watch in 2025:

  • Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship (U of T) -- Covers full tuition, books, and living for 4 years. Extremely competitive.
  • University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarship -- CAD 15,000 (N11.5M).
  • Humber College International Entrance Scholarships -- CAD 1,000-4,000.
  • MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program -- Full funding at various Canadian universities for African students.
  • Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships -- CAD 50,000/year for doctoral students.

Most college-level scholarships range from CAD 1,000-5,000 and are merit-based. Apply early, as many have deadlines in February-March for September intakes.
