Scholarships for Nigerian Students Abroad 2025: Fully Funded & Partially Funded

The Study Abroad Consultant·28 December 2024·8 min read

Scholarships are the most searched topic among Nigerian students planning to study abroad, and for good reason. With tuition fees ranging from N10 million to N70 million per year depending on the country, a fully funded scholarship can be the difference between studying abroad and staying home. The good news is that there are more scholarship opportunities for Nigerian students in 2025 than ever before.

After years of helping Nigerian applicants secure funding, I can tell you that most students fail not because they are unqualified, but because they apply to the wrong scholarships, miss deadlines, or submit weak personal statements. This guide gives you a clear overview of the best opportunities available and the strategies to win them.

Quick Summary: Top 10 Scholarships for Nigerian Students in 2025

What Does "Fully Funded" Actually Mean?

A fully funded scholarship typically covers:

  • Tuition fees -- the full cost of your programme
  • Monthly living stipend -- enough to cover rent, food, and transport
  • Return flights -- economy class tickets from Nigeria to your study destination
  • Health insurance -- required medical coverage in your host country
  • Visa fees -- some scholarships cover this, others do not

Not all "fully funded" scholarships cover every single expense. Always read the specific terms. Some cover tuition and stipend but not flights. Others cover everything except visa fees.

Chevening Scholarship: The Gold Standard for Nigerian Students

Chevening is the UK government's flagship scholarship and one of the most competitive globally. It covers a one-year Masters at any UK university.

What it covers: Full tuition, monthly stipend of GBP 1,133 - 1,389 (N2.27M - N2.78M depending on location), return flights, visa fees, arrival allowance, and a thesis or dissertation grant.

Eligibility: Nigerian citizen, at least 2 years of work experience (they count part-time, volunteering, and internships), must return to Nigeria for at least 2 years after completing the programme.

Application timeline: Opens August, closes November. Interviews February-March. Results May-June.

For a complete application walkthrough, read our Chevening scholarship guide.

Chevening values leadership and networking potential over academic excellence alone. Your essays should demonstrate how you have influenced others, solved problems, and built relationships -- not just list your grades and achievements. The strongest Nigerian Chevening applicants tell specific stories about impact in their communities or workplaces.

DAAD Scholarships: Germany's Answer to Chevening

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers several scholarship programmes for Nigerian students. The most relevant are:

DAAD Development-Related Postgraduate Courses: Fully funded Masters programmes in Germany specifically designed for students from developing countries including Nigeria. The monthly stipend is EUR 934 (approximately N934,000) for Masters students, plus tuition waiver, health insurance, travel allowance, and study allowance.

DAAD In-Country/In-Region Programme: Scholarships for Masters and PhD studies at selected African universities, funded by the German government.

What makes DAAD attractive: Germany already has low or zero tuition at public universities, so the DAAD stipend is genuinely surplus -- it covers your living costs comfortably. Combined with free tuition at German public universities, this is one of the most affordable paths to a world-class degree.

Application timeline: Most DAAD programmes have deadlines between August and October for the following academic year.

Australia Awards: Fully Funded and Underrated

Australia Awards Scholarships are funded by the Australian government and cover the full cost of study in Australia. Despite being extremely generous, they receive far fewer Nigerian applications than Chevening.

What it covers: Full tuition, return airfare, establishment allowance (AUD 5,000, approximately N5.25M), contribution to living expenses (AUD 3,500/month, approximately N3.68M), Overseas Student Health Cover, and supplementary academic support.

Eligibility: Nigerian citizen, at least 2 years of work experience, must return to Nigeria for at least 2 years after completing the degree.

Why Nigerians overlook it: Australia feels far away, and the application process is slightly more complex. But the scholarship value is enormous -- the total package for a 2-year Masters can exceed AUD 120,000 (approximately N126M).

Application timeline: Opens February, closes April-May. Very early compared to Chevening.

How Can Nigerian Students Win More Scholarships?

Having reviewed hundreds of successful and unsuccessful scholarship applications from Nigerian students, here are the patterns I see:

Start 12-18 months early. The strongest applicants begin researching scholarships over a year before the deadline. This gives time to build the experiences (volunteering, leadership roles, relevant work) that scholarship panels look for.

Tailor every application. Do not copy-paste the same personal statement across five scholarships. Chevening wants leadership stories. DAAD wants development relevance. Australia Awards wants community impact. Each panel has different priorities.

Get strong references. Your referees should know you well enough to write specific, detailed letters. A generic letter from a professor who barely remembers you will not help. Brief your referees on the scholarship criteria and remind them of specific projects or achievements they can mention.

Apply to multiple scholarships. Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to at least 3-5 scholarships each cycle. Rejection is normal -- even excellent candidates get turned down.

| Mistake | Better Approach | |---------|----------------| | Applying only to Chevening | Apply to 3-5 scholarships across different countries | | Generic personal statement | Tailor each essay to the specific scholarship criteria | | Waiting until deadline week | Start applications 2-3 months before deadline | | Weak references | Brief referees with specific examples to mention | | Ignoring eligibility criteria | Read every requirement carefully before applying |

Beware of scholarship scams. Legitimate scholarships never ask you to pay an application fee or processing fee. If someone asks you to pay money to "secure" a scholarship, it is a scam. All the scholarships listed in this guide are free to apply for. Check the official scholarship website directly -- do not trust links sent via WhatsApp or social media.

What About Partially Funded Scholarships?

If you do not win a fully funded scholarship, partially funded options can still reduce your costs significantly: GREAT Scholarships (UK) offer GBP 10,000 (N20M) towards tuition; university merit scholarships at UK and Canadian universities offer N4M - N20M in tuition discounts; and graduate assistantships in the USA and Canada provide tuition reduction plus a monthly stipend.

What Should I Do Next?

The scholarship landscape is competitive but far from impossible. Nigerian students win hundreds of fully funded scholarships every year -- the key is early preparation, targeted applications, and persistence. Start by identifying 3-5 scholarships that match your profile and timeline, then work backwards from the deadlines to build your application strategy.
