IELTS in Nigeria 2025: Minimum Score Requirements, Test Centres & Preparation Tips

The Study Abroad Consultant·1 January 2025·7 min read

If you are a Nigerian student planning to study abroad, IELTS is almost certainly on your radar. The International English Language Testing System remains the most widely accepted English proficiency test for university admissions and visa applications worldwide. In 2025, understanding the exact score you need, where to take the test, and how to prepare efficiently can save you months of frustration and tens of thousands of Naira in retake fees.

As a consultant who has guided hundreds of Nigerian students through the IELTS process, I can tell you that the biggest mistake applicants make is underestimating the preparation time. Most Nigerian students score between 5.5 and 6.0 on their first attempt, but many programmes require 6.5 or higher. This guide gives you everything you need to get it right the first time.

Quick Summary: IELTS Score Requirements by Country

| Country | Undergraduate | Masters | Visa Minimum | Notes | |---------|--------------|---------|-------------|-------| | UK | 5.5 - 6.5 | 6.5 - 7.0 | 4.0 (SELT) | Most universities want 6.0+ | | Canada | 6.0 - 6.5 | 6.5 - 7.0 | 6.0 overall | No band below 6.0 for SDS | | Australia | 5.5 - 6.5 | 6.5 - 7.0 | 5.5 overall | Some programmes need 7.0+ | | Germany | 5.5 - 6.5 | 6.0 - 7.0 | Not required for visa | Only needed for English-taught programmes | | USA | 6.0 - 7.0 | 6.5 - 7.5 | Not required for visa | University-specific requirements | | Ireland | 6.0 - 6.5 | 6.5 - 7.0 | Not required for visa | University-specific requirements |

Scores reflect general ranges. Always confirm with your specific university and programme.

Where Are the IELTS Test Centres in Nigeria?

Nigeria has multiple IELTS test centres operated by the British Council and IDP Education. Here are the major locations:

Lagos:

  • British Council, Ikoyi -- the largest and most popular centre in Nigeria
  • IDP Education, Victoria Island

Abuja:

  • British Council, Abuja -- good availability, often easier to book than Lagos
  • IDP Education, Abuja

Port Harcourt:

  • British Council, Port Harcourt

Enugu:

  • British Council, Enugu -- convenient for students in the South-East

Test dates are available almost every week in Lagos and Abuja, and two to three times per month in Port Harcourt and Enugu. The computer-based test (CDT) is available in Lagos and Abuja and gives you results in 3-5 days instead of 13 days for the paper-based test.

Book your IELTS test at least 4-6 weeks in advance, especially during peak periods (January-March and July-September) when seats fill up fast. If Lagos dates are fully booked, check Abuja -- it often has more availability and the test is identical regardless of location.

How Do I Register for IELTS in Nigeria?

The registration process is straightforward:

  1. Choose your test type. IELTS Academic is required for university admissions. IELTS General Training is for immigration purposes only. Do not book the wrong one.
  2. Visit the British Council or IDP website. Create an account and select your preferred test date and centre.
  3. Pay the fee. As of 2025, the IELTS fee in Nigeria is approximately N130,000 - N140,000 (about GBP 65 - 70 or USD 100 - 108). Payment is typically by card or bank transfer.
  4. Upload your passport photo and ID. You will need a valid international passport -- the same one you plan to use for your visa application.
  5. Receive confirmation. You will get an email with your test date, time, and venue details.

Results are available online 13 days after a paper-based test or 3-5 days after a computer-delivered test. You can send your results directly to up to five universities for free.

How Should Nigerian Students Prepare for IELTS?

Set a realistic timeline. If you speak English fluently but have never taken IELTS, give yourself 4-6 weeks of focused preparation. If your English needs improvement, plan for 2-3 months.

Focus on your weakest section. Most Nigerian students score highest in Reading and Listening but struggle with Writing and Speaking. Identify your weak areas early and allocate more time to them.

Use official materials. The Cambridge IELTS practice test books (volumes 15-19) contain real past exam questions and are the gold standard for preparation.

Practice under timed conditions. Complete the Reading section in exactly 60 minutes, Task 1 in 20 minutes, and Task 2 in 40 minutes. Time pressure is where most Nigerian students lose marks.

Take a preparation course if your budget allows. British Council Nigeria offers courses from N80,000 - N120,000 (approximately USD 52 - 78). Affordable online options include Magoosh and IELTS Liz.

What Are the Alternatives to IELTS?

IELTS is not your only option. Here are the main alternatives accepted in 2025:

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English):

  • Available in Lagos and Abuja
  • Cost: approximately N130,000 - N150,000 (USD 100 - 115)
  • Results in 1-2 business days
  • Fully computer-based, including the speaking section (you speak into a microphone, not to a human)
  • Accepted by most UK, Australian, and Canadian universities
  • Many students who struggle with IELTS Speaking find PTE easier because there is no face-to-face element

Duolingo English Test:

  • Taken online from home on your computer
  • Cost: approximately USD 65 (N100,000)
  • Results in 48 hours
  • Accepted by over 4,500 institutions worldwide, including many in the USA and Canada
  • Not yet accepted for UK student visas (you still need IELTS or equivalent for the visa itself)
  • Convenient but less widely accepted than IELTS or PTE

TOEFL iBT:

  • Available in Lagos and Abuja
  • Cost: approximately USD 200 - 210 (N310,000 - N325,000)
  • More popular for US university applications
  • Results in 4-8 days

| Test | Cost (Naira) | Results Time | Best For | |------|-------------|-------------|----------| | IELTS | N130K - N140K | 3-13 days | UK, Canada, Australia | | PTE Academic | N130K - N150K | 1-2 days | UK, Australia, Canada | | Duolingo | N100K | 48 hours | USA, some Canadian schools | | TOEFL iBT | N310K - N325K | 4-8 days | USA |

Which Universities Offer IELTS Waivers?

Some universities will waive the IELTS requirement if you meet certain conditions. Common waiver scenarios include:

  • You studied your previous degree in English. Some UK and Canadian universities accept this as proof of English proficiency. You will typically need a letter from your previous university confirming that the medium of instruction was English.
  • You completed a foundation or pathway programme. If you studied a university-approved foundation programme taught in English, the IELTS may be waived.
  • You have a high Duolingo score. Some universities accept Duolingo as a full IELTS replacement, particularly in the USA and Canada.

Be careful with IELTS waivers. Even if a university waives IELTS for admission, you may still need an approved English test for your visa application. The UK requires a SELT (Secure English Language Test) for student visa purposes, and IELTS for UKVI is the most common option. Always check both the university requirement and the visa requirement separately.

What Should I Do Next?

The key to IELTS success is early preparation and realistic goal-setting. Start with a practice test to establish your baseline score, then build a study plan that targets your weak areas. Register for a test date that gives you enough preparation time but still meets your application deadline.

If you are targeting UK universities, aim for a minimum of 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. For Canadian institutions, the same 6.5 overall is the sweet spot, especially if you want to qualify for the Student Direct Stream (SDS) for faster visa processing.

Do not let IELTS become the bottleneck in your study abroad journey. With the right preparation strategy and enough lead time, most Nigerian students can achieve their target score on the first or second attempt.
