Yes, you can study abroad with your WAEC results. This is one of the most common questions I receive from Nigerian students and parents, and the answer is a clear yes -- but with important conditions depending on your destination country. Your WASSCE certificate alone will not get you directly into a first-year degree programme at most international universities, but it opens the door to foundation and pathway programmes that lead to full degree admission.
WAEC is a legitimate, internationally recognised qualification. The issue is not that foreign universities look down on WAEC -- it is that the Nigerian secondary education system is structured differently from the British A-Level, Canadian Grade 12, or German Abitur systems.

How Can I Study in the UK with WAEC?
The UK is the most accessible destination for Nigerian students with WAEC results, thanks to a well-established foundation year system.
Foundation Year Programmes: These are one-year preparatory courses designed specifically for international students whose qualifications do not meet direct entry requirements. After completing a foundation year, you progress directly into the first year of your chosen degree programme -- often at the same university.
How it works:
- Apply to a UK university's International Foundation Year (IFY) programme with your WAEC results (minimum of 5 credits including English and Mathematics)
- Study for one academic year (September to June)
- Achieve the required grades in your foundation programme
- Progress to Year 1 of your undergraduate degree
Popular foundation providers for Nigerian students:
- University-embedded foundations -- offered by universities like Coventry, Hertfordshire, and De Montfort. Progression is virtually guaranteed if you pass.
- Kaplan International Pathways -- partners with University of Liverpool, Nottingham, and Bristol.
- INTO University Partnerships -- partners with University of Exeter, Newcastle, and others.
Typical cost: GBP 10,000 - 18,000 (N20M - N36M) for tuition, plus living costs.
Some UK universities offer an "Integrated Foundation Year" where the foundation year is built into a 4-year degree programme instead of being a separate course. This can be cheaper overall and guarantees your degree place. Universities like Aston, Brunel, and Brighton offer these integrated programmes. Check our UK destination page for more options.
Can any UK university accept WAEC directly? A very small number of less selective UK universities may accept strong WAEC results (five A1s and B2s) for direct entry into Year 1, but this is rare and programme-specific. The foundation route is the standard and most reliable path.
How Can I Study in Canada with WAEC?
Canada's approach to WAEC is slightly more flexible than the UK, but the landscape varies significantly between provinces and institutions.
Direct admission (limited): Some Canadian colleges (not universities) accept strong WAEC results for diploma programmes. You typically need a minimum of 5 credits with grades C6 or above, including English and Mathematics. Colleges in provinces like Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick tend to be more flexible.
Pathway programmes: Several Canadian universities and colleges offer pathway or bridging programmes for students whose qualifications need supplementing. These last one to two semesters and lead to direct entry into degree programmes.
The college-to-university transfer route: This is the most popular path for Nigerian WAEC holders going to Canada. You start at a college (lower tuition, easier admission), complete 1-2 years, then transfer to a university to finish your degree. Provinces like British Columbia and Ontario have formal transfer agreements between colleges and universities.

How Can I Study in Germany with WAEC?
Germany has a clear pathway for Nigerian WAEC holders: the Studienkolleg.
What is Studienkolleg? It is a one-year preparatory course at a German institution that brings your qualifications up to the level required for German university admission. After passing the final exam (Feststellungsprüfung), you can apply to any German university.
How it works for Nigerian students:
- You need your WAEC results plus evidence of at least one year of university study in Nigeria (or a completed diploma/HND). WAEC alone is generally not sufficient -- you need WAEC plus some post-secondary education.
- Apply to a Studienkolleg and obtain an admission letter
- Complete the one-year Studienkolleg programme in Germany
- Pass the Feststellungsprüfung exam
- Apply to German universities with your Studienkolleg certificate
Cost: Studienkolleg at public institutions is free or costs only EUR 100 - 500 per semester (N175K - N875K). You still need the blocked account of EUR 11,904 (N20.8M) for your living costs and student visa. Learn more about the blocked account and German university costs.
If you have only WAEC/WASSCE without any post-secondary education in Nigeria, most German universities and Studienkollegs will not accept your application. You typically need WAEC plus at least one year at a recognised Nigerian university or polytechnic. If you have only WAEC, consider completing a diploma or one year of university in Nigeria first, or choose the UK foundation route instead.
What Myths About WAEC and Studying Abroad Should I Ignore?
Myth 1: "WAEC is not recognised internationally." False. WAEC/WASSCE is recognised by universities worldwide as a legitimate secondary school qualification. The issue is equivalency, not recognition. It is considered equivalent to O-Levels, not A-Levels, which is why a foundation year is often needed.
Myth 2: "You need all A1s to study abroad." False. Most foundation programmes accept grades from C4 to B3 in relevant subjects. You do not need straight A1s. Five credits including English and Mathematics is the typical minimum.
Myth 3: "You must have JAMB/university admission before applying abroad." False. You can apply to international foundation programmes with WAEC results alone. You do not need a JAMB score or a Nigerian university admission letter (except for Germany, which requires post-secondary education).
Myth 4: "Agents who promise direct admission with WAEC to top universities are legitimate." Be extremely cautious. If someone promises you direct admission to a top-ranked university with only WAEC and no foundation year, they are very likely misleading you. Legitimate consultants will be honest about the foundation requirement.
What Documents Do I Need?
Regardless of your destination, prepare these documents:
- WAEC/WASSCE certificate -- original and certified copies
- WAEC result scratch card verification -- printout from the WAEC website
- School testimonial or leaving certificate
- International passport -- valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date
- IELTS/PTE score -- most foundation programmes require IELTS 4.5 - 5.5
- Transcript from Nigerian university -- if applying to Germany or Canadian transfer
- Birth certificate and passport photographs
What Should I Do Next?
Your WAEC certificate is not a limitation -- it is a starting point. Thousands of Nigerian students with WAEC results are currently studying at excellent universities in the UK, Canada, and Germany through foundation and pathway programmes. The extra year is an investment that prepares you academically and culturally for success in your degree.
If cost is your primary concern, Germany's Studienkolleg offers free tuition. If speed matters most, the UK foundation year gets you into a degree within 12 months. If long-term immigration is your goal, Canada's college pathway offers affordable entry and a path to permanent residency.
